A shooting in Markham on Tuesday night claimed the life of one person.
At before 6:45 p.m., emergency workers were dispatched to the vicinity of Purple Finch Road and Russell Jarvis Drive, near Markham Road and Highway 407, for a shooting, according to York Regional Paramedic Services.
At the scene, one victim was discovered without vital signs. Paramedics say another person was taken to a local trauma center with unknown injuries.
The person found without vital signs was sent to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, according to York Regional Police. Police said they couldn’t say for sure if the second person who was taken to the hospital was involved in the shooting.
According to authorities, one suspect may be in jail at the moment, but their link to the crime is unknown.
Const. Laura Nicolle told CP24, “This is obviously early in and quite active, and the material is continuously changing and progressing right now.”
Officers are currently enforcing a substantial police presence in the area while they investigate the homicide.
Neighbors told CP24 that they were surprised to see such an occurrence in their generally tranquil neighborhood.
“This is the type of act that would be surprising and upsetting to the community.” However, we do want the public to be aware that our detectives are on the case. “Officers in that region will be aggressively working on this,” Nicolle said.
“The safety of the community is our first concern.” So we’ll make sure we discover and determine who’s to blame, as well as keep the neighborhood secure.”
She advised anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage to call the police.
